Doc Rivers shoots down report that he may bolt L.A. to rejoin Orlando Magic
LOS ANGELES – Doc Rivers forcefully refuted a report that he is considering an offseason exit from the Clippers that would lead him back to the Orlando Magic, the team with which he got his start in coaching.
“I have a past with the Magic,” Rivers said Saturday. “I have no future. My future’s here.”
Rivers is in the third year of a five-year contract to serve as both the Clippers head coach and president basketball operations. However, with Blake Griffin, Chris Paul and J.J. Redick all set to hit free agency, there is a league-wide expectation that the Clippers roster could undergo a significant shakeup if the Clippers fail to make a deep run in the playoffs.
According to a report from ESPN.com on Saturday, that could include Rivers. Depending on how the rest of the season plays out, the report suggests that owner Steve Ballmer could explore changes throughout the organization. If Rivers were seeking an exit strategy, the option that has coursed through the NBA’s grapevine would be a return to Orlando, where General Manager Rob Hennigan is on the hot seat.
Rivers, whose primary residence is in the Orlando area, coached the Magic from 1999-2003.
When Rivers arrived from Boston in 2013, he said, he established the goal of establishing a sense of “pride of place” with L.A.’s less popular NBA team.
“When I took this job that was my goal,” he said. “I haven’t accomplished that yet. That’s my goal that drives me to make this a destination that you want to come to and have pride in. I think we’ve improved it greatly but it’s still not where… I haven’t reached my goal at all, and I’m fully aware of that.
“I am a goal seeker, that’s who my life has been and that’s my goal right now. That’s my only goal.”
The ramifications of another first round have the potential to be dramatic. Will Paul and Griffin want to reunite for yet another run when each of the first six together have been fraught with disappointment? Can they afford to pay Redick market value with the salary cap at an all-time high?
And does Rivers have the appetite to remain on the sidelines to coach the Clippers through some version of a rebuild?

STAYING READY
Rivers caught some off guard earlier last week when he said Paul Pierce might be able to contribute down the stretch for the Clippers.
Before Thursday night in Denver, Pierce had not played since Feb. 5 in Boston.
“My job is just to be ready,” said Pierce, who plans to retire after this season. “I ain’t played too many games this year, so my job is just to stay ready.”
In his 19th NBA season, Piere said his lack of court time this season has not affected his approach.
“I’m thinking I’m going to play every game,” he said. “I prepare like I’m going to play every game. That’s how I prepare. I come here, I work, I prepare mentally, to get ready to play.”
Rivers said Thursday that Pierce could help out as a smaller power forward in certain lineups.
“He’s so smart,” Pierce said. “When we’re playing with the smaller four I think Paul can help us.”
Pierce started the second and fourth quarters for the Clippers against Cleveland, finishing with 5 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists in 9 minutes. Mid-way through the fourth he scored on a one-handed dunk from the baseline.
