Nutcracker at The Whitney
The "Strolling" Nutcracker will be performed inside the mansion and will move with the audience from room to room as the holiday classic unfolds.
It is a unique performance and to date is the only ballet of its kind to be performed inside a mansion. The Southeastern Michigan Classical Ballet will be performing the Ballet November 14th and 15th, 2023 for four performances inside the great estate.
The audience actually feels as if they're part of the production as they watch the story of Clara and her beloved Nutcracker come to life. Audience members will move with the performers from room to room inside the grandiose mansion as each scene of the Nutcracker is performed. Each room is elaborately decorated in true holiday fashion.
Instead of back drops and grand sets, the mansion serves as a natural backdrop to the ballet. Costumes are authentic and were made in England and are in the true Victorian fashion.
No details were spared when planning the performance inside the mansion. It is an intimate setting, under 50 tickets per show are sold, so it sells out quickly.
As I mentioned last week, whenever I host a themed event I like to do a lot of inspirational research… sometimes that means putting together a mood board of sorts… sometimes I imagine a very specific character and design the party around what I envision to be his or her aesthetic. For this party, I did a bit of both. I ended up drawing much of my inspiration from imagery of low lit alters and ritual spaces, vintage tools of the craft, weathered apothecary cabinets, and old homes filled with dusty antiques. I’d be lying to say that the old Victorian home, in the film Practical Magic, with the most amazing apothecary pantry didn’t cross my mind a time or two. I wanted my table to have that same time worn, yet enchanted feeling.

These spells are said to be extremely potent and can cause great harm or even death to those unfortunate enough to be on the receiving end. In some folklore, the diabolical witch sentry is known to be bound to its master through a powerful enchantment or pact. It is said that the sentry will remain loyal and devoted to its master until its dying breath, always ready to defend and protect against any danger. While the existence of a diabolical witch sentry is primarily rooted in mythology and legends, it continues to capture the imagination of many. The concept of a guardian creature with supernatural abilities acting on behalf of a powerful witch or sorcerer has remained intriguing and popular in various forms of literature, films, and games. Overall, the diabolical witch sentry embodies the dark and mystical aspects of witchcraft and serves as a symbol of protection and power. Its mythos adds to the rich tapestry of mythologies surrounding witches and magic, leaving an everlasting impression on those who encounter its legend..
