The Salem witch trials were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. The trials resulted in the executions of 20 people, 14 of whom were women. It all started when a group of young girls began exhibiting strange behavior, such as screaming, throwing objects, and claiming to be possessed by witches. Their accusations led to the arrest and interrogation of several individuals, mostly women, who were suspected of practicing witchcraft. The trials were conducted in a court of law, but the evidence presented was often based on spectral evidence and hearsay. Many of the accused were subjected to harsh interrogation methods, including sleep deprivation and torture.
