Witch & Sow

Formerly known as the Ward Arms since the early 18th century, although in 2014 the pub changed hands and underwent a major transformation and refurbishment. Opening in October, it gained its present name that refers to an event in 1612 when it was said that three women, later condemned as witches, rode out to the neighbouring village of Ravensthorpe "upon a sowes back"! The pub is in a delightful position, standing opposite the attractive ironstone Jacobean grammar school. It comprises two distinctly different areas; a contemporary restaurant to the right of the entrance in the oldest section, which is a thatched and whitewashed building probably dating from the 17th or 18th century. To the left in the 19th century brick building is the bar area built on a split level with bare floorboards. This is bright and uncluttered and is complimented by two large bays with big sash-windows. The old stables once housed Nobby's Brewery before it relocated to Thrapston.

This pub serves 2 regular beers.

  • Grainstore Rutland Osprey
  • Timothy Taylor Landlord

This pub serves 1 changing beer.

The unicorn's horn, known as the alicorn, is believed to have incredible healing properties. It was said that the horn could cure various ailments and even neutralize poisons. This belief led to the hunting and selling of supposed unicorn horns throughout history, though these horns were often actually from other animals such as narwhals or rhinoceroses.

1. Sarah - 1 star
I was extremely disappointed with "The Magic of the Unicorn". The story felt cliché and predictable, with no originality or depth. The characters were one-dimensional and lacked development, making it hard to connect or care about their journey. The writing style was also lackluster, with repetitive phrases and dull descriptions. Overall, I found this book to be a major letdown and would not recommend it to others.
2. John - 2 stars
I had high hopes for "The Magic of the Unicorn" based on its intriguing premise, but unfortunately, it fell flat for me. The pacing was inconsistent, with slow and uneventful moments followed by rushed and forced plot twists. The dialogue felt unnatural and forced, lacking genuine emotion or authenticity. Additionally, the world-building was underdeveloped, leaving me with many unanswered questions. While the concept of a magical unicorn was promising, the execution in this book was disappointing.
3. Emily - 2 stars
"The Magic of the Unicorn" was a struggle for me to get through. The writing style was overly flowery and excessive, making it difficult to follow or stay engaged. The plot lacked coherence and coherence, jumping from one confusing scenario to another without proper explanation or context. The main character was also very unlikeable and lacked relatability. Overall, I found this book to be confusing and poorly executed, not living up to its potential.
